    Building The Nest

Welcome to The Nest blog!  You'll find all the latest news about The Nest project here.  It's also a place where you can take part in a conversation about what works to improve the health, wellbeing and life opportunities of young Australians.  Please feel free to leave comments, ask questions, and share your thoughts here.

If you haven't already checked it out, take a look at The Nest survey.  It only takes five to ten minutes, and your views will be includedas part of a national consultation.  You can also join our facebook page or follow us on twitter.

Over the next six months or so The Nest will identify and collect evidence and real-life stories of what does and doesn’t work to improve outcomes for children and young people in Australia.

The evidence review and consultation will be used to develop a national plan for coordinated action later this year.  As we go, we'll be posting findings and thought-starters on this blog.

We’re really pleased to have the support of many partners and friends in building The Nest. Over the last week we have been conducting briefings with potential consultation partners across the country, and it’s been pleasing to get such a positive, can-do response. We look forward to working with these and many others over the next few months, as this will allow The Nest to include the views of all sorts of people from all over the country.

The Nest is for everyone – it’s not about any one group or person telling us what to do. It’s all of us, as a collective, as a community, as a country, coming together to consider what needs to be done to advance the wellbeing of children and young people. That’s why we are inviting people to have their say and shape The Nest, whether that’s by taking part in our short survey or working with our consultation partners to undertake activities across the country.

We look forward to hearing from you!

    The ARACY team

    Looks like a good initiative

Looks like a good initiative but says it is a national program. Not sure how it can say that when the expert reference group is made up of people from the eastern states only. And where are the health promotion experts?? We dont need to reinvent the wheel. The evidence about what works is to make communities healthier and that will improve the health of everyone. In these economically focussed, randomised trials, cost benefit analysis times we operate in, these approaches are never given time to actually get embedded. Look at the Healthy and Sustainable Cities movement advocated by WHO and that will give you many of the answers . Work at the local level.

    Secondary Schools need to

Secondary Schools need to take a serious look at the Beyond Blue SenseAbility program to teach resilience and improve mental health in the secondary population. It is a national initiative with focus on CBT strategies.

    I agree that the secondary

I agree that the secondary school population should be the focus of a very creative initiative to counteract vulnerablility, anti-social activity and unhealthy trends. I believe we need to be looking carefully at how our city is profiting from behaviours that endanger secondary students' health and wellbeing. Excessive alcohol consumption and 24 hour access to it should be critically reviewed.

Is CBT Cognitive Behaviour Therapy? Can you explain something about it?

    We need to legislate against

We need to legislate against the physical punishment of children. 31 other countries have instituted such legislation, and Australia is very much behind on this issue.
